In the heart of Singapore, nestled amidst the serene landscape, lies the timeless grave of Mrs Tan Quee Lan, a remarkable figure from the past. With its rich history and significance, this traditional Southern Chinese tomb stands majestically on the hilly lawn near Sian Tuan Avenue. Let's embark on a journey to discover the captivating tale behind this iconic resting place.

The Life of Mdm Gan

Mrs Tan Quee Lan, affectionately known as Mdm Gan, was the beloved wife of Mr Tan Quee Lan, a prominent landowner during his time. Mr Tan held ownership of a fruit plantation along Bukit Timah Road and possessed several other properties in the revered Club Street area. Interestingly, the very land upon which Mrs Tan Quee Lan's grave now rests was also part of Mr Tan's estate.

Transforming Hands and Shifting Sands

As time passed, circumstances saw the hands of fate sway the ownership of the land. In 1938, the property changed ownership, transitioning away from the stewardship of the Tan family to an external buyer. Several decades later, in 1982, the renowned property developer Sian Tuah Properties Pte Ltd acquired the land. Eventually, in 1987, the government stepped forward, officially acquiring the site.

A Testament to Family Bonds

Today, Mrs Tan Quee Lan's grave continues to stand tall, bearing witness to the enduring legacy of her cherished family. Traditional Southern Chinese tombstone craftsmanship adorns the gravestone, immortalizing the memories of Mrs Tan Quee Lan's children. She was blessed with two sons and three daughters, leaving a lasting impact that reverberates through generations.

Honoring Their Legacy

Reflecting the tremendous influence and contributions of the Tan family, it comes as no surprise that a street bears their name. Tan Quee Lan Street, located near Beach Road, serves as a tribute to Mr Tan's legacy, forever etching their name within the cityscape of Singapore.

The grave of Mrs Tan Quee Lan stands as a testament to an extraordinary woman and the indelible mark she left on her family's history. Nestled amidst the picturesque surroundings of Sian Tuan Avenue, this traditional Southern Chinese tomb preserves a story that transcends time. Paying homage to Mrs Tan Quee Lan and the love she shared with her family, it serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring power of heritage and remembrance.
