ETYMOLOGY

• The term is the transliteration of the English word “coupon”.
• Parking coupons are widely used in Singapore. They were introduced in the 1980s. Initially, drivers had to write down the date, time and place of parking on the parking coupon.
• Parking coupons subsequently evolved, and drivers were only required to tear off circular tabs on the coupons to indicate the dates and times of parking, then display them on the front of the windscreens for inspection.

SAMPLE SENTENCE

The parking app, parking.sg, goes online today and can be used for payment of parking charges in 1100 coupon-based public car parks islandwide. Most of the motorists who were interviewed, said they would download the parking app. (Lianhe Wanbao, 1/10/2017)
