Institute of Technical Education (ITE)

A technical school offering technical courses to secondary school graduates. It is abbreviated as “ITE”.Also known in Mandarin as "工教院".

  • Since its founding in 1979, the Vocational and Industrial Training Board (VITB) has played a pivotal role in providing functional and technical training in Singapore.
  • In April 1992, the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) replaced VITB. ITE is a post-secondary institution that aims to upgrade vocational training in Singapore.
  • At that time, as Singapore was moving towards high-end technology, employers were more likely to hire those who have completed 10 years of education and received vocational training after graduating from secondary school. Therefore, many organisations encouraged their employees to upgrade their skills.
  • The N-level or O-level certificate is the pre-requisite to enrol in a full-time course at ITE. ITE also offers courses to working adults to improve their skills.

23-year-old Nicholas Chan, an Institute of Technical Education (ITE) graduate, stood out from over 2,000 applicants this year to become one of 280 freshmen who were successfully admitted to the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. (Lianhe Wanbao, 18/05/2019)
