junior college

DEFINITION: Noun. An institution which provides post-secondary education, in preparation for university.
ETYMOLOGY

  • Prior to 1969, Pre-University courses were offered as part of the curriculum for Singapore secondary schools.
  • In 1969, the first Pre-University school was established in Singapore, and was known as National junior college. Junior college students in their second year have to sit for the Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘A’ Level Examinations.
  • In 2004, the Ministry of Education introduced the Integrated Programme, where students in the programme could advance into subsequent years of studies in the same secondary school that has a high school section, or a junior college that participates in the programme, allowing them to skip the Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Level Examinations.
  • Due to declining enrolment, several junior colleges were merged in 2019, reducing the total number of junior colleges from 23 to 19.
SAMPLE SENTENCE
