junior college

DEFINITION: Noun. An institution which provides post-secondary education, in preparation for university.

  • Prior to 1969, Pre-University courses were offered as part of the curriculum for Singapore secondary schools.
  • In 1969, the first Pre-University school was established in Singapore, and was known as National junior college. Junior college students in their second year have to sit for the Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘A’ Level Examinations.
  • In 2004, the Ministry of Education introduced the Integrated Programme, where students in the programme could advance into subsequent years of studies in the same secondary school that has a high school section, or a junior college that participates in the programme, allowing them to skip the Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Level Examinations.
  • Due to declining enrolment, several junior colleges were merged in 2019, reducing the total number of junior colleges from 23 to 19.

The integrated programme for participating secondary schools and junior colleges is open for application from today. The pre-enrolment activities for Polytechnics and Institutes of Technical Education (ITEs) will be opened for application within these two months, according to schedule. (Lianhe Wanbao, 7/5/2018)
