Light Rail Transit (LRT)

DEFINITION

Lightweight trains that run on tracks.

ETYMOLOGY

• The Light Rail Transit (LRT) was constructed to serve the transportation needs of commuters in new towns and connecting passengers to the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) stations. In 1999, the first unmanned LRT service was launched in Bukit Panjang. Two other LRT lines in Sengkang and Punggol were opened for passenger service in 2003 and 2005 respectively.

SAMPLE SENTENCE

Two faulty trains disrupted the Bukit Panjang LRT service for two hours yesterday afternoon, with 90 passengers affected. Many of them were forced to walk on the wet and slippery track in the drizzle. Some held umbrellas, some carried young children and others even walked with prams. (Lianhe Wanbao, 20/5/2018)
