The site of the Goodman Arts Centre was occupied by three different schools over time. Firstly, from the 1960s to the late 1980s, it was used by Tun Seri Lanang Malay Secondary School. Then, in preparation for the new LASALLE College of the Arts, the site was expanded between 1993 and 1995. The new school was developed in phases with facilities catering to different art disciplines, including a Design and Fine Arts Building and a Music and Drama Building in the first phase and a new library and gallery complex in the subsequent phase.

From 2007 to 2009, the School of the Arts (SOTA) occupied the site. In 2010, the National Arts Council announced the establishment of the Goodman Arts Centre as a pilot project under the New Framework for Art Spaces. The redevelopment works for the site increased the number of spaces and types of spaces available for new artist tenants. Shared facilities such as galleries, music and dance studios, and F&B outlets for the public were also refurbished to attract members of the public to participate in the centre's activities.
