Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple traces its origins to a small shrine in the 1850s. It was said that a statue of Lord Vinayagar was found by the side of a pond beside a Chempaka tree, which was called Senpaga in Tamil. The first temple building was constructed by Indian workers with the contribution of Ceylon Tamil, Mr Ethirnayagam Pillai.

In the early twentieth century, the growing Ceylon Tamil community decided to form the Singapore Ceylon Tamils Association (SCTA). The temple subsequently came under the management of SCTA and expanded over the years to its current scale. The present-day temple dates from the late 1990s.
