Singapore commemorated its first National Day on August 9, 1966, in recognition of the country's first year of independence. The highlight of the celebrations was a grand parade held at the Padang, which was attended by then-President Yusof Ishak and members of the Cabinet. The parade featured military, police, and civilian contingents, as well as a march-past consisting of 23,000 participants.

The parade, which commenced at City Hall and passed through Chinatown before ending in the Tanjong Pagar area, was televised 'live' for people to partake in the festivities. Over the years, subsequent editions of the National Day Parade (NDP) were held at various locations like the National Stadium and the Marina Floating Platform.

The NDP has grown into a significant part of Singapore's annual National Day celebrations and attracts many citizens and visitors alike. It showcases the nation's achievements and diversity while promoting unity and patriotism among the people.
