The Kranji site in Singapore houses two cemeteries of national significance: the Kranji War Cemetery, which is the burial site of soldiers who died defending Singapore and Malaya during World War II, and the Kranji State Cemetery, which is the burial site for two former presidents of Singapore. The Kranji War Cemetery has its origins in a prisoner-of-war camp established by the Japanese in 1944, where prisoners who died were buried in a cemetery on a hill behind the camp. After the war, this cemetery was chosen as the site of a permanent war cemetery for Allied soldiers, containing more than 4,400 graves today.

To honour soldiers who died without a grave, the Singapore Memorial was designed by architect Colin St Clair Oakes and unveiled in 1957. It comprises 12 walls inscribed with the names of over 24,000 soldiers. Kranji State Cemetery, located just outside Kranji War Cemetery, was established by the Singapore government in 1970 to honour individuals who have made significant contributions to national progress. The cemetery contains the graves of two former Presidents of Singapore: Yusof Ishak and Dr Benjamin Sheares.
